Nike Improves Safety and Response Time to Maintenance Issues with Pack Mule Stock Chasers and Burden Carriers
Nike, a premier manufacturer of footwear, apparel and sporting equipment, has a new 2,800,000 sq. ft. distribution center in Memphis, TN. The center, which handles an annual throughput of 271,000 million units, is the size of 49 football fields. It’s a two-mile walk around the building.
The facility was built to offer greater cost efficiencies, reduce shipping times and increase service capabilities for Nike’s consumers and retail partners.
Also, Nike was counting on the operations there to elevate the Nike Supply Chain in ways that would have a positive impact on its entire portfolio and strengthen its brand.
Because of the new center’s size and scale, Nike’s maintenance team was spending an inordinate amount of time traveling throughout the facility, and team members were depending on available forklifts to give them “rides” to their locations. Nike needed a way to improve productivity, safety and reduce the trip times—especially when maintenance issues were critical.
Wesley International provided Nike with demo units of the Pack Mule Stock Chaser SC-775-6CA and Burden Carrier BC-620-6CA. After extensive testing and careful consideration, Nike placed an order for 39 Stock Chasers and six Burden Carriers.
Since using the Pack Mule stock chasers and burden carriers, Nike has been able to boost its overall response time to maintenance issues by roughly 30%, move more personnel and material in a single trip and reduce its dependence on forklifts. The maintenance crew can now move more effectively, quickly and safely within the building.
